Samples of Work - Year 6 beginners

Preliminary
We start Latin in Year 6, which is divided into two sets by ability, 6A/6.1 and 6B/6.2. The Latin setting is determined by the children´s previous performance in French. We have a rewards system based on ´Good Marks´ (GMs). For any half decent piece of work I award a half-GM (GM/2). I mark in turquoise ink, because I like it. You can judge from the date of the children´s work the amount of time for which they have been studying Latin. I insist on written corrections, and in my marking indicate where the problems are. Children invariably get wrong things right the second time around. I stress that learning from mistakes is a key skill, and try to instill an ethos that there is nothing wrong in making a mistake, if you learn from it. As you will (eventually) see, after a term and a half even the lower ability children are working in Latin which is far in advance of what they will be tested on in the English-Latin sentences in CE Level 1.
